Khorramabad, The City of Untamed and Pristine Nature

Khorramabad is capital of Lorestan province. Lorestan is known by its untamed and pristine nature, it is called the land of waterfalls. Its population was 373,416 in Census 2016.

According to the researchers and archaeological findings, Khorramabad has always been considered as a communication link among surrounding area and also a major human settlement during the pre-Islam era, the copper Age and contemporary history.

History

The territory of Khorramabad has a rich historical precedent and has seen the rise of civilizations such as the Kasi, Babylonian, Elamite, Sassanid, Seljuk, Kharazmshahi and other civilizations. The relics from these eras are found in the city. There is an ancient and historical castles in the town which were used to guard the city against attacks.

The city of Shapurkhast (Shapour was one of the Sassanid king) is turned to current Khorramabad. It was built under the order of king Shapour and it was one of the most important and developed cities in the Sassanid era. The Falak-ol-Aflak castle were built during the reign Shapour I (the king of Sassasnid).

Unfortunately, after Mongol’s attack, the city were conquered and the buildings of the Shaputkhast city were destroyed.

During the Qajar period, the city was limited to environs of Falak-ol-Aflak Castel. This era was the beginning of migrations from small villages into Khorramabad and it led the city to development.

Falak-ol-Aflak is a castle which was built in Sassanid era. It is also known as the Twelve Towers Castle, Shapur Castel and Khorramabad Castle. The names “Twelve Towers” and “Falak-ol-Aflak” are mentioned to Constellations. Throughout its history, the castle has had various uses such as a government headquarters, a military garrison and a political prison (during the first and second Pahlavi dynasty) and a museum (after the Islamic revolution).

The number of monuments which is listed on National Heritage List of Iran is more than 2470.
