Lahijan is one of the oldest cities in Gilan Province, it used to have a fortress at the time of the Parthians. The fort remained in existence until the Mongol invasion in the seventh century, which later were destroyed.

It was a city of remarkable size; It has deal by producing silk and rice and corn, as well as oranges and citrus fruits.
